Travel disruption due to volcanic ash cloud (20.04.10)
This summary covers some general rules for passengers who bought insurance cover prior to 15.04.10.
For customers who are currently stranded abroad
- Your policy will be automatically extended until you can return home.
- No cover can be provided for additional accommodation or transport costs incurred abroad in connection with this event.
- Please speak to your airline, tour operator or travel agent who may be responsible for some or all of your costs or can provide alternative arrangements.
For customers who have not yet travelled
- Please contact your tour operator, airline or travel agent who may be able to rearrange your trip for a later date.
- If your trip dates change, we will transfer your insurance to the new dates at no additional cost.
- If there is a change of destination, duration or your state of health, you may have to pay extra to cover your new trip.
There is no cover for cancellation of your trip, any travel delay or missed departure due to the volcanic cloud. Our insurers have confirmed that the disruption caused by this event is not deemed ‘adverse weather’.
The only natural disaster cover that we have under our policies refers to the cancellation and curtailment sections which embrace:
‘A government directive prohibiting all travel to, or recommending evacuation from, the country or area you were planning to visit or were staying in, as a result of natural disasters (such as earthquakes, fires, tsunamis, landslides, floods, hurricanes or epidemic(s) / pandemic(s).’
As no government body is recommending against travel to or evacuation from a specific country or area as a result of the disaster, there is no cover for this specified event.
We are liaising with our insurers and if there are any changes, an update will be posted.
