A taste of Thai lands!

A taste of Thai lands!
Known as a ‘land of smiles’, the Kingdom of Thailand is well-regarded as a nation of genuinely friendly, happy and smiling people with a rich cultural heritage and a unique serenity. It’s said that Thailand is a place which cannot be explained, only experienced. And the nearly 25 million visitors to the country last year would appear to support that allure. Part of its appeal comes from the hundreds of idyllic islands that float in the Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea, with their pristine beaches, contemplative isolation and abundance of natural beauty.

Popular with folks of all demographics, from gap year backpackers to sun-seeking families, Thailand is a year round destination but some of the best weather is between November and April. So, if you’re looking for a holiday towards the end of the year, book early for the best island deals. With plenty of different island options available, why not head east for a relaxing break.

The TopDog Insurance team look at some of the great Thai islands on offer!

This is Thailand’s largest island located off the southwest coast and home to around 40km of beaches! If you’re looking for that perfect escape, this makes for an ideal choice with something for everyone. And whilst it’s fairly popular, there are still quiet beaches, like Kamala, where you can wander and enjoy the peace. Head into Phuket Town to explore the local culture and history as a noted trading port – you can even bag a bargain in early morning markets too! Watch a traditional dance show, relax with a cocktail as the sun sets over the Andaman Sea or party the night away in one of Phuket’s legendary nightclubs!

Koh Samui

Koh Samui is Thailand’s second most popular island retreat, a tropical paradise that attracts many visitors from around the world. Here you can enjoy a laidback pace of life, located off the east coast of the Thai mainland. Spend days lounging on white sands or in the turquoise waters snorkelling and kayaking. Or those wanting to be pampered, Koh Samui has a number of luxury spa resorts offering fabulous treatments in amazing surroundings. If you do fancy exploring the island, a round trip can be done in just a couple of hours. The island also hosts several significant sporting events such as ceremonial Buffalo Fighting Festivals and the Samui Sailing Regatta.

Koh Phi Phi Ley

Koh Phi Phi Ley is a picture perfect island, just a short journey from Phuket and part of the Phi Phi island group (of which Koh Phi Phi Don is the other significant one). Its primary claim to fame is as the shooting location for the film The Beach, notably around Maya Bay. Alongside that, the island boasts limestone cliffs, beautiful white rock formations and abundant colourful marine life. Take a boat tour out from Koh Phi Phi Ley (as this island has no tourist accommodation apart from overnight camping on the beach) and the crystal clear waters are perfect for scuba diving, sailing or for just floating in the blue lagoons.

Koh Lanta

Fast establishing itself as a hot destination, this island group located near to the Phi Phi Islands and Phuket, is a wonderful district to really take in Thailand’s natural splendour. Made up of a cluster of islands, the 3 main ones being Koh Klang, Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai. White sandy beaches, rugged, forested hills and stately mangroves make them a particularly great place for a romantic escape. Diving enthusiasts will love exploring some of Thailand’s best coral reefs at Hin Daeng and Hin Muang. Other major attractions include the Khao Mai Kaew Caves, historic Lanta Old Town and the botanic splendour of the Orchid Nursery Farm.

Koh Chang

This wonderfully tranquil place is mostly a protected marine park, therefore remains relatively untouched from development. It’s Thailand’s third largest island and lies near the Cambodian border. Come here for a great place to relax and explore the lush mountainous rainforest with its abundant wildlife and splendid waterfalls. Elephant trekking and hiking are available here, offering access to the island’s verdant interior. There are good opportunities for marine activities too and watching beautiful sunsets is a popular pastime on this island. And if you come here in January, you can observe traditional celebration rites and displays by the Navy on Yutthanavi Day.

Wherever your travels take you this year and however you choose to save, we at TopDog Insurance are committed to providing you with the highest level of protection to ensure that you are safe and secure, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year when away.
