Around a city in a day and a half!

Around a city in a day and a half! In today’s fast-paced world it can be difficult to allocate sufficient time for a long, leisurely break. Thankfully, with today’s easy-to-book hotels and transportation, there are a multitude of destinations for those who are time poor - all in the space of a short weekend!

City breaks are ideal for folk who want a little change from their normal routine. Perhaps time off from the kids, new sights, different culture, enjoyable food and drink … and 36 hours may just be all you need!

The TopDog Insurance team look at some ideas-packed cities that might appeal for those a little more strapped for time.

Stockholm, Sweden

The Swedish capital, spread over islands and between canals, is particularly lovely as the weather starts to get crisper. Cafés are abundant in this city, with the average Swede consuming 4.5 cups of coffee a day! Take a historic tour through the winding medieval alleys of Gamla Stan and slip down the waterways on a sightseeing boat trip. Or perhaps gallery hop through some great art museums, then have a bite to eat at food halls with gourmet herring and artisan hot dogs and end your evening in a trendy pontoon bar enjoying the lively music scene!

Helsinki, Finland

Urban social design & architecture is integral to the Finnish capital and, in 2012, it was designated a World Design Capital! Check out the Art Nouveau central railway station with its famous copper roof or stroll through Esplanade Park and its twin boulevards lined with neo-classical buildings and upmarket boutiques. Head in from the museum district to Kauppatori (the main market square) and indulge in a snack of wild blueberries, smoked fish, cheese and pastries before heading off to the scenic harbour. And don’t forget to stock up on souvenirs, handicrafts and food items at the city’s main department store, Stockmann, to round off an exciting weekend!

Montpellier, France

If you’re looking for a burst of Mediterranean splendour, then Montpellier in the south of France is perfect. This elegant and charming city with broad boulevards and a car-free central square is likely to still be warm enough in October to sit outside. Enjoy world-class architecture and dining at the bustling restaurants of the historic centre. Notable attractions include St Peter’s Cathedral, the Musée Fabre for its excellent collection of European Art and the Night Market. And as the hours tick down, grab some delectable local wine to make your journey home even smoother.

Valencia, Spain

Spain’s third largest city boasts great shops, a bustling nightlife and miles of beaches too. Visit the cathedral and climb the Micalet for amazing views before wandering through the old town. A visit to L’Oceanografic, the largest aquarium in Europe should be on everyone’s card. Enjoy fresh orange juice and lunchtime paella outside the art nouveau Central Market, where over 1,000 stalls and numerous museums may take your fancy. For the fashion-inclined, there is La Lonja, the silk exchange and indoor market which is popular for tourists and locals alike, making for one stylish trip!

Bari, Italy

Deep in the south of Italy, on part of its most idyllic coast, Bari is the capital of the Apulia region. The region has a strong Greek influence with ancient olive trees, orchards and hilltop towns in abundance. The city is noted for its gorgeous religious buildings such as the Basilica of St Nicholas and Bari Cathedral. Visit the sweeping Swabian Castle or wander through the Barivecchia, the quaintly sprawling northern streets, dine on fresh produce and hand-made orecchiette (ear-shaped pasta) before ending your night with an opera at the Petruzzelli Theatre. Perfect for a weekend of Romance!
