Jazz originated in the late 19th/early 20th century in the African-American interpretations of American and European traditional music entwined with African folk songs and focussing significantly on performances. One of the greatest appeals of the genre is that the composition and style changes with each performer's personal interpretation and improvisation – and definitely something to be experienced in the moment.

Growing out from its roots across the United States, jazz is enjoyed and performed all over the world. Whether it’s well-known American artists like Louis Armstrong, Count Basie and Billie Holliday or newer artists like Norah Jones, George Benson and Andreas Varady, there’s bound to be someone with a style you like. And there’ll be plenty more headlining and freestyling their way at jazz festivals in 2015 across Europe, making it really easy for find something amazing to listen to.

The TopDog Insurance team lists some of the European music festivals in 2015 featuring brilliant jazz performances for you to enjoy.

Jazz Fest Wein; Vienna, Austria (26th June – 8th July)

Jazz Fest Wein is definitely one that jazz lovers from all over the world flock to attend. Held in one of the music capitals of the world, the City of Vienna has supported this since it started in 1991 with 9 different venues across the city taking part. Many of the locations host free performances, such as the Town Hall Square and Summer Stage by the Danube. Around 50 musicians and groups perform each year, drawn from the full range of jazz styles, many with a spin towards the folky or bluesy arms of the spectrum. Artists confirmed for this year include Caro Emerald, Rufus Wainwright and the Roger Cicero Jazz Experience.

Copenhagen Jazz Festival; Copenhagen, Denmark (3rd - 12th July)

This ten-day long extravaganza in Denmark’s capital has been held every summer since 1979, showcasing the city’s place for a diverse and progressive jazz scene. A true auditory feast, it’s all set to continue a tradition of being one of the most important international jazz events and will feature some of the very best Danish and international artists. You can enjoy around 1250 live jazz performances, held in 100 venues, such as clubs, cafés, concert halls and open-air night venues, all in the heart of this historical city. Artists swinging in for 2015 include Tony Bennett dueting with Lady Gaga, Jamie Cullum and Sinne Eeg.

Montreux Jazz Festival; Montreux, Switzerland (4th -19th July)

This festival in the country’s south-west began back in the ‘60s and is held in an absolutely striking location – on the shores of Lake Geneva! It has grown to include a number of events and music genres, though jazz has always remained the core around which the festival has grown. From free concerts in the Rock Cave, performances from school swing bands and funky collectives to jazz competitions and workshops, this is one to delight any jazz aficionado. Headlining acts this year feature Herbie Hancock, the Kronos Quartet and Anna Calvi whilst Emeli Sandé and The Chemical Brothers also make an appearance.

North Sea Jazz Festival; Rotterdam, the Netherlands (11th -13th July)

With up to 20,000 visitors having been recorded attending in a single day, this could be one of the biggest jazz festivals in the world. First held in the The Hague in 1976, in 2006 it shifted to its present venue of Rotterdam. Ideal for a long weekend away, the more spacious surroundings means you’ll be able to really enjoy more than a thousand musicians performing across 13 stages. Like the others showcased here, there is a broad variety of jazz styles on offer from traditional big band to Dutch avant-garde. With headline performances from Chick Corea, Candi Staton and Rudresh Mahanthappa, this festival is brimming with style!

Jazz in Marciac; Marciac, France (27th July – 15th August)

Probably one of the best French music festivals in 2015, this is an annual festival that takes place in the quaint 13th century town of Marciac in south-western France. It began in 1978 as just one concert organised by a teacher and now has international acclaim and over 6,000 visitors. This tiny and intimate festival manages to attract the big stars of the scene while still allowing you to get really close to the music and its performers. There are plenty of free events around the town over the two-week period of the festival. Gilberto Gil, Lisa Simone (daughter of Nina) and the Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club are amongst those gracing this Gascony town this year.
