Surfing the best sites

Surfing the best sites
Successfully riding a wave as it breaks onto the shore is probably the best thrill you can experience when you’re learning to surf. There’s the excitement as you paddle up to the wave, a rush of adrenaline as you get into position, sheer elation as you somehow manage to maintain balance, all topped by exhilaration as the power of the sea carries you to shore. It’s enough to spark off a serious fixation on this pastime.

Ask any surfing enthusiast and they’ll swear there’s nothing to beat this thrill. Part of the adventure in fact is that folk actively plan surfing holidays to find the ideal experience in different parts of the world. The behaviour of global waters varies and so does the nature of the surfing available at different locations. Some aficionados spend many pleasurable years hunting down the greatest waves for one more chance of riding high!

The TopDog Insurance team lists some of the top surfing destinations on the planet, so you too can start to plan your very own surf trip.

Oahu, Hawaii, USA

The Hawaiian archipelago, already a popular spot for beach vacations, is by far one of the best surf destinations in the USA. And Oahu, home to the state’s capital at Honolulu, is an ideal spot to catch some waves. Depending on your skill level, there is definitely somewhere for you to indulge and not be out of your depth. If you’re a beginner, head to the calmer waves of the famous Waikiki Beach. But if monster waves and wipe-outs are what you’re after, then the famous Banzai Pipeline, Sunset Beach and Pupukea Beach should definitely be your go-to surfing destinations to enjoy along with the famous Hawaiian hospitality.

Bali, Indonesia

This Indonesian province is a true tropical paradise that’s home to some of the best surfing beaches in the world. Referred to as ‘the island of a thousand waves’ within surfing circles, it’s not just the excellent quality found here but also the sheer quantity of incoming waves and excellent offshore conditions that keep surfers coming back for more. Besides its stunning waters, the island is also home to a rich culture and friendly people. And as part of the Coral Triangle, the marine biodiversity is amazing. Providing an ideal environment for an adventure, Bali is definitely one for your surfing itinerary.

Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain

Lanzarote is the northern-most of the Canary Islands, lying about 100km off the Moroccan coast in the Atlantic. It provides a haven for beginners and those on family surfing holidays with its two main resorts. There's one on the east coast which is purpose-built for water sports and offers quality accommodation but doesn’t have direct access to the surf. A smaller one on the west coast boasts around 1,500m of what some consider the most beautiful surfing beaches in Europe, set against a dramatic backdrop of volcanic mountains. Accommodation here may be basic but it’s favoured by surfers who love its simplistic charm and the convenient access without having to rely on any shuttle service.

Queensland, Australia

Surfing in Australia is not just a sport but almost a way of life. The island’s north-eastern shoulder with its 70km of gorgeous beaches and four epic point breaks has won Queensland’s Gold Coast the nickname ‘Surfers’ Paradise’. One of the best ways to make the most of the coast is to book a picturesque self-drive surf package holiday so you can travel at a pace that best suits you. While nearly every beach on the coastline will provide you with amazing surfing opportunities, each beach town has a unique vibe and a range of different experiences. Australia really is a great destination for surfers at all levels.

Pretty much the whole of this Iberian country’s coastline is good for surfing. In particular, the areas around Cortegaça, Lisbon and the Algarve are some of the best surfing destinations for you to try. Each offers something different and the waves here can be enjoyed by both beginners and experts, depending on the season. Lisbon is the most popular and accessible location and you can even enjoy windsurfing and kite surfing holidays here too. Whilst quite popular amongst surfers, Portugal still remains one of the places where you can indulge without worrying about too many people crowding your waves.

While any of these places provide ideal conditions to experience the best surfing holidays, know that surfing, like travel, does have inherent risks and we atTopDog Insurance are committed to providing you with the highest level of protection to ensure that you are safe and secure, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year when away.
